Camping Chronicles at Tambuki: A Review of My Sondela Adventure

Tambuki Campsite Review Sondela Nature Reserve

In this Article:

Greetings, fellow adventurers and couch surfers who are pondering the great outdoors! Buckle up as I take you on a laugh-filled journey through my recent escapade at Tambuki campsite, nestled in the stunning Sondela Nature Reserve. Spoiler alert: I learned a lot about camping, my own coordination (or lack thereof), and the power of good friends—and a strong bottle of wine.

First Impressions: Welcome to Tambuki!

As we rolled into Tambuki late in the evening, the beauty of the lush greenery was somewhat lost on us—thanks to the thick darkness enveloping the campsite. We fumbled around, trying to locate our camp number designation like blindfolded toddlers in a maze. Just when I was about to panic and consider sleeping in the car, we were rescued by a kind camper from Campsite 1, who guided us to our spot. I’m pretty sure I offered them my eternal gratitude and maybe a lifetime supply of marshmallows for their heroics!

Accommodation: Camping Stands Galore!

Now, let’s talk about where you’ll be sleeping—or attempting to sleep, if you’re like me. Tambuki only offers camping stands, and trust me, these are as pretty good. We snagged number 3 stand right in the middle of 2 and 4. I’m not sure if it was a great idea or a major blunder, but let’s just say our neighbors were closer than I would have preferred. I could practically hear them debating whether to add pineapple to their pizza. Spoiler: I voted no.

For those seeking a little more elbow room, I recommend checking out Stands 1 and 5. These bad boys offer a bit more privacy, making them ideal for those who prefer to enjoy their camping experience without feeling like they’re part of a communal sitcom. Seriously, if I wanted to hear people’s late-night discussions about the best way to roast marshmallows, I would’ve set up camp in the middle of a college dorm.

Ablutions: The Good, The Bad, and the Humorous

Now, let’s discuss the ablution facilities. Because what’s camping without a good ol’ chat about showers, right? The showers here are heated by a manual fire geyser, affectionately known as a “donkey.” Yes, you heard that right—a donkey! It’s a bit of an adventure to get hot water, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll need a strategy. Just remember, fire safety is key!

Now, this donkey is quite large, so don’t plan on hopping into the shower 30 minutes after firing it up—unless you fancy a rather chilly experience! Privacy is provided by canvas doors to the shower stalls, which sounds lovely until you realize that they might not be quite as private as you’d hope. Trust me, it’s a good idea to coordinate shower times with your fellow campers to avoid any embarrassing moments—like getting caught with your pants down on the bench while trying to make a graceful exit. Nothing quite says “camping bonding” like a surprise shower reveal!

And the best part? Sondela provides the wood for the donkey, so you won’t need to hunt down firewood like a desperate caveman. Just grab some, get that fire going, and you’ll soon be on your way to a hot shower (and a hopefully less embarrassing exit).

Activities: A Fun-Filled Adventure Awaits!

Now, let’s dive into the activities at Sondela. While there were a few we didn’t get around to (don’t ask how many game drives we skipped), we did manage to explore some fantastic offerings, especially since we were there over a long weekend!

1. Wildlife Centre: A Nature Lover’s Delight

Our first stop was the Wildlife Centre. This was a highlight for us, and not just because it offered a chance to see some animals without needing a 4×4 or binoculars. The centre is dedicated to educating visitors about local wildlife, and I finally got to see some of the animals we’d missed on our drive. The kids were fascinated and I had a brief existential crisis about who would win in a staring contest—me or a meerkat. Spoiler: the meerkat won.

2. Ziplining: High-Flying Fun!

Since it was a long weekend, Tambuki had set up some special activities, and ziplining was definitely one of the big draws. The kids were all about it, flying over us like mini superheroes while I stood at the base, looking like a nervous parent trying to figure out if I could simultaneously take photos and offer life advice. They went again and again, each time coming back with even bigger grins and wild stories of their aerial exploits. Who knew adrenaline could look so cute?

3. Wall Climbing: Reach for the Stars

Next up was wall climbing, which turned out to be a hit. The climbing wall was a colorful sight, and I may have underestimated how much energy it would take to scale it. The kids clambered up like they were part monkey, while I took a more cautious approach—more of a “let’s observe from the ground” kind of vibe. I mean, who needs the glory of reaching the top when you can enjoy the shade and a snack, right?

4. Bungee Trampolines: Bounce Into the Sky!

And let’s not forget about the bungee trampolines! The kids were absolutely obsessed with being launched into the air. Picture them, harnessed and giggling, soaring sky-high like they were training for the Olympic gymnastics team. Meanwhile, I stood on the sidelines, torn between cheering them on and wondering if I should maybe try it myself—until I remembered my coordination issues from earlier. Better to stay grounded and save my dignity!

5. Activities We Didn’t Do (But You Should Consider!)

Now, for those of you who are a bit more adventurous or perhaps just better planners than I am, here are some activities we didn’t get around to but are definitely worth considering:

Game Drives: If you have more time than we did, the guided game drives offer a chance to see animals up close. Sadly no big five but we did see a huge tortoise on our way out of our camp. Just don’t forget your binoculars!

4×4 Obstacle Course: Perfect for thrill-seekers looking to test their off-roading skills. Just imagine the dust clouds and adrenaline rush!

Quad Biking: For those who want to kick up some dirt and zoom around the reserve, this is the way to go. I can only assume it’s like riding a very loud, very fast horse.

Bicycle Hire: If you’re feeling energetic, hire a bike and explore the beautiful trails around Sondela. Just be sure to watch out for any rogue animals!

Food: Communal Braai and Campfire Creations

After a day filled with thrilling activities, it was time to refuel. While there’s a communal braai area with a cozy fireplace for those looking to mingle, we decided to take matters into our own hands and fired up our trusty konka. We were well-equipped and ready to show off our culinary skills—or lack thereof.

Over our four-night stay, we grilled up a storm! From sizzling hamburgers, including braai meat and juicy hotdogs to campfire nachos that made my kids feel like culinary geniuses, we made sure nobody went hungry. We even tried our hand at some more adventurous dishes, including pizza, chicken breyani, and yes—bacon and flapjacks for breakfast. Because nothing says “I’m on holiday” quite like breakfast that involves bacon and syrup!

Each meal turned into a mini-feast, filled with laughter and the occasional cooking disaster (let’s just say some hotdogs got a little too crispy). The smell of our campfire creations wafted through the air, competing with the neighbor’s debates about pizza toppings.

Final Thoughts: Would I Return?

Without a doubt! My time at Tambuki and Sondela was nothing short of epic. Between the stunning scenery, exciting activities, and the friendly atmosphere, I felt like I was on a mini-vacation.

So, if you’re looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle, immerse yourself in nature, and enjoy a hearty laugh (preferably at my expense), Tambuki is your ticket to adventure. Just remember to pack your sense of humour, some comfy shoes, and maybe a helmet if you’re as clumsy as I am!

Now, go forth, fellow adventurers, and let Tambuki steal your heart just as it did mine. Happy camping!
