Dutch Oven Lasagne: A Culinary Adventure in the Wild!

Campfire Dutch Oven Lasagne Recipe for Outdoor Cooking

In this article:

Greetings, fellow wanderers and food enthusiasts!

Today, we’re embarking on a culinary journey that combines the rustic charm of camping with the comfort of a classic Italian dish. Yes, we’re making Dutch Oven Lasagne! This isn’t just any lasagne; it’s a campfire masterpiece that even my eldest daughter can’t resist. So, grab your gear, and let’s get cooking!

Ingredients

For the Bolognese:

  • A dash of oil (or 1-2 tablespoons if you’re feeling precise)
  • 2 medium-sized onions, chopped (because who needs tears in the wilderness?)
  • 3 garlic bulbs (vampires beware!)
  • 1kg minced meat (the heart of our dish)
  • 2x 410g cans of chopped tomatoes (or 2kg fresh tomatoes if you’re feeling fancy)
  • 2x 50g sachets of tomato paste (for that extra tang)
  • 10ml salt (a pinch of magic)

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 350ml milk (the creamy dream)
  • 2 tablespoons of flour (to thicken things up)
  • 5ml salt (seasoning is key)
  • 5ml freshly ground pepper (for a bit of kick)

For Assembly:

  • 250g mascarpone (the creamy delight)
  • 150-200g grated cheddar (because cheese is life)
  • Lasagne sheets (the layers of love)

Instructions

Step 1: Start Your Campfire! 🔥 Let’s get those flames roaring and the coals glowing. This is where the magic happens.

Making the Bolognese:

  1. Warm up your skillet and add the oil. Once it’s hot and ready, toss in the onions and fry until they’re soft and golden.
  2. Add the garlic and mix it through. Fry for another 20-40 seconds, but keep an eye out—burnt garlic is a no-go!
  3. Now, add the minced meat and sprinkle with salt. Cook until all the moisture is gone and the meat starts to brown.
  4. Pour in the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste. Mix thoroughly and let it simmer. Stir occasionally to get the moisture out, but don’t let it dry out completely. We want a perfect balance!

Making the Béchamel Sauce:

  1. Heat the milk in a saucepan. Slowly does it!
  2. Add the salt and pepper, then whisk in the flour. Keep stirring over low heat to avoid burning.
  3. Once it starts to thicken, take it off the heat. It should be smooth, not runny or too thick.
Assembling Campfire Lasagna

Some Assembly Required:

  1. Spread a thin layer of bolognese at the bottom of your Dutch oven.
  2. Spread mascarpone on one side of the lasagne sheets and place them on the meat, mascarpone side down. Break the sheets as needed to fit your round Dutch oven.
  3. Repeat the layers: bolognese, mascarpone lasagne sheets, and so on. Crisscross the sheets for easier serving.
  4. Finish with a layer of bolognese, then cover with béchamel sauce.
  5. Sprinkle grated cheddar on top. Make sure it’s evenly covered.

Baking the Lasagne:

Baking Campfire Lasagna
  1. Place coals under the Dutch oven. If it has legs, great! If not, create some space between the bottom and the coals.
  2. Add coals to the lid. Bake for about 40 minutes or until the cheese is golden and bubbly. Keep an eye on the coals and adjust as needed.

Final Step: Add more logs to the campfire, dish up, pour a nice glass of wine (or soda for the kids), and enjoy your lasagne while listening to the sounds of nature. Just watch out for those pesky mosquitoes!

Bon appétit, and happy camping!
